Most people old enough to have watched the earliest airings of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer probably don’t remember that the entire hour was sponsored by General Electric.
It was standard practice back in those days to have advertisements integrated directly with the show. In Rudolph’s case the special aired on the General Electric Fantasy Hour, a presentation of their housewares division. As part of that sponsorship, all the ads were for totally ’60s household appliances, like electric knives and shoe buffers.
The ads were presented by the same elves that gave Hermie such a hard time about wanting to be a dentist. And, yes, the entire special was originally aired in black and white.
