Vintage Christmas: Puck Magazine, Dec. 9, 1896

Puck, published weekly from 1871 until 1918, was America’s first successful humor magazine. The title of the magazine, and its cherubic mascot—seen here with a liquored-up Santa Claus—are inspired by the character from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Puck, published in both English and German, featured cartoons and political satire, and was often biased against Irish Americans.
